Scale8 Tag Manager, a great alternative to Simple Analytics

Today, there are many alternatives to Google Analytics. While it is still the most popular analytics tool in use, a growing number of website owners have started to look for alternatives to Google Analytics. Many may cite the GDPR issues Google has faced in recent years as a reason to look for an alternative, others that they’re looking for a simpler tool.

Simple Analytics has built its product upon this last reason, as their name implies. They offer a product that will “show you the essentials”.

Simple Analytics is undoubtedly a good alternative to Google Analytics for many website owners, yet we believe that we can offer more with our Scale8 products. While there are some similarities between the two, there are also some key differences that we think might give Scale8 the edge for people searching for privacy-focussed Web Tools.

What are the similarities?

Before we take a look at the differences between the two, let’s start with where they are similar.

No Cookies

Just like Scale8, Simple Analytics doesn’t use cookies and doesn’t collect any personal data. This means that the products can be used without the website owner worrying about whether they’re being compliant with GDPR. It also means that visitors to the site can enjoy the content without having to deal with distracting CMPs.

You retain ownership of your data

Neither Scale8 nor Simple Analytics will take any ownership of your data or collect any Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

This also means that we’ll never sell or pass on any data to a third party. On the other hand, Google can’t guarantee this, which is why their analytics tool is free to use, whereas Scale8 and Simple Analytics have to charge for their products.

Ease of use

Both Scale8 and Simple Analytics have designed their products to be intuitive and easy to use.

Google Analytics, while offering you more features, is ultimately a far more complicated tool to use. Based on the team at Scale8’s experience, many of these features are unnecessary to the vast majority of website owners, serving only to make the product more difficult to use.

Alternatively, the tools offered by Scale8 and Simple Analytics have been created to offer you all of the features you need, while preventing the product from becoming overly complicated, meaning that you can use them as soon as you sign up and with no prior training needed.

What are the differences?

As we’ve seen, both products share some similarities in their aim to offer a better alternative to Google Analytics. However, there are some key differences.

Simple Analytics isn’t Open-Source

Similar to Google Analytics and many other analytics tools, Simple Analytics isn’t open-source. While this may not overly affect how you use the product, there are benefits to open-source software. For example, software that is open-source can be easily checked by the customer or other third parties, to make sure that it’s exactly what it says it is on the package with no errors.

Scale8 is proud to be open-source. We believe that this benefits the wider community, plus it makes all of our code transparent. This means that anyone can check, use, or alter our code for their own needs.

You can find all of our code on Github.

Another area where Scale8 and Simple Analytics differ is with their plans and prices. Simple Analytics offer 3 packages at competitive rates:

Monthly page views< 100K< 1 Million> 1 Million
Price*†$23.50$72.80Subject to change

* Correct at time of writing
† Converted from GBP

Scale8’s prices are considerably lower, and are much more adjustable. You can choose from a variety of packages, ranging from 5,000 page views to 10 million plus.

Below are some of the prices that Scale8 offers on our Tag Manager:

Monthly requests50K100K1 Million10 Million

* Correct at time of writing

As well as these plans, you can also get plans for monthly requests numbering at 5K, 250K, 500K, 2.5 million, 5 million, 10 million plus, at which point you’ll have a custom price set.

These extra increments in plans allow you to find the plan that’s a perfect fit for your site, and you always have the option to change plans as needed.

Trial period

Both Simple Analytics and Scale8 offer prospective customers the chance to trial their products for free before committing to their service, without the need to give any credit card information.

Where the two differ is in the length of the trial period. Simple Analytics offers a 14 day free trial, whereas Scale8 offers a 30 day free trial. This gives you that much more time to test out the product and explore what it can offer you before deciding to commit.

Tag Manager and JavaScript Error Tracking

This, in our opinion, is what sets Scale8 apart from Simple Analytics.

While Simple Analytics only offers an Analytics tool, Scale8 also offers Tag management and JavaScript error tracking.

By including tag management and error tracking alongside our analytics tool, you receive a whole host of benefits that you might need to search elsewhere for if you opted for the Simple Analytics tool.

Our easy to install tag manager makes integrating and editing tags on your site a simple process. With our plans starting from just $10 a month, you can get our tag management, error tracking and analytics tools for less than it would cost you to get just the analytics tool from Simple Analytics.

Alongside the tag management and analytics tools, you’ll get access to our effective Javascript error tracking feature. Since software errors are virtually impossible to avoid, having error tracking gives you the best chance to find any errors in your software and deal with them before they cause any major issues on your site. Our dashboard is designed specifically to make it easy for you to see what’s going on on your site.

So which to go for?

As with most things, choosing the analytics tool that’s right for you will be down to personal preference. However, as we’ve shown, we believe that Scale8 can offer website owners a more complete product package which will keep your website running smoothly and efficiently, with plans that are both competitively priced and tailored to your specific needs.
